Shadowrunner's Server - Postby ShadowRunner » 01 Nov 2006, 16:23

Im buying a new PC next week and changing ISP to get 4mb connection.
Also my old PC only needs a new CPU or motherboard and is very upgradeable. I'm thinking the new PC will be Pentium 4, 160 HD and about 1 Gig Ram...

Is this good enough to run a server? What spec would be ideal?
I could play on the other PC and run a server called [FGS]Shadowrunner's server.

I didnt decide anything, but I like what Nobody does, alternate maps/play weekly... I would do the same, with the emphasis on maps...I didnt ask permission of any mapper yet but I was imagining...

e.g week 1 = DXSG with augs...
week 2 = best of DXMS maps with 0-augs
Week 3 = New map week. + Stock favourites
Week 4 = RPG week / Something different week... (sorry it's top secret)
Week 5 = Oldie but goldie maps... the best of 6 years....
Week 7 = map testing week. Proposed DXMS maps and any other map proposal or beta version I would host for testing and battle-testing etc...

I was thinking maps should be rotate not voted... basically something different to current servers... taking the best from all and mixing...

the aim of the server would be to offer somewhere to go for a short time, not to compete with other FGS servers or other clans' servers, more a place to visit before or after... probably up 24/7 (shudders)

Specification:

1 Gig Ram

Yes that enough - well, if you want host a big server (20+), having 1,5 gig ram is a good choice. But for start - 1 GB is enough.

Pentium 4

Speed? 2 giga-h will be enough. It would be wise if you cloud get an Athlon FX-64 - afik its great for servers, but its a bit expensive CPU. But P-4 whit 2.0 clock is also good.

4mb

4 MegaBYTES or 4 MegaBITS? Thats a big diffrence - i think that you know why :P

Well, you can host this 7 types of maps and mods, and make topic whit poll and ask people what server was the best - and choose the 2-3 best types.

GL whit your server - i'm sure it will be cool!
