Yeah I heard Holland refers to a certain part of the Netherlands, perhaps the natives only refer to this? The rest of us ignorants refer to Holland as being the same as the Netherlands.

That is correct. We ourselves call our country 'Nederland', literally 'low land'. The English name for our country is actually (incorrectly, I might add) plural. I'm guessing that is a remainder of our historic republic, the Republic of Seven United Netherlands, which was a union of seven provinces. I guess the name just stuck. Holland was one of those provinces. Nowadays there are two of them, to spread out economic importance more over all the provinces. A united Holland would be too powerful, economically, in comparison to the rest of the country. So, in short, Holland is a part of the Netherlands.
