Most of the exceptional 0augers I know use or used mx518, some prefer to use lower dpi but frankly said the higher dpi value is what makes it easier to aim. It wont make you amazing, it just helps you aim smooth if you have the fps for it, thats about it. After setting your mouse to maximum dpi you lower dx mouse sens as low as you can to minimize game acceleration, disable mouse acceleration from windows registry and windows mouse settings, bring windows mouse sensitivity to neutral speed (middle dot) and if you choose to use mouse software acceleration that too should not be above average value. Your office mouse might be ~1000 dpi while it wasnt unusual to have ~200 dpi on the cheaper mice. Ive had ~200dpi ball mice and optical mice, think I had 400dpi optical once as well.. On the comparison your 1000+ office optical/lazer will be that much more smooth, and the gaming mice now tend to have up to 2000+ dpi.

You're right. When I bought my Razer mouse I could really notice myself being better than before.

Ugh I hate those tiny mouses. Using a logitech here, wouldn't know the name even if you put a gun against my head.

A friend of mine has that one too. It really rocks. I've got a Diamondback 3G, which is a step down but still a pretty good mouse.

Been long since I last played proper DX but I remember a problem that I always had. When I'm sniping and making a very slight move at aiming, the crosshair just moves too much to the desired direction. Imagine it like.. you want to make one step and you're only able to make two. How do I change that? FPS maybe? I'm afraid that increasing it will mess up my firerate due to the dual core system I use.

increase dpi decrease sensitivity disable acceleration
could be any of those. of course if your framerate lags down (30ish?) that might have something to do with this trouble.
