I believe that every software that uses the Internet has an effect on other similar softwares. I don't know how often but I'm sure that in certain periods XFire refreshes itself to show who logged in or what other game some that dude on your partnerlist plays. And that MUST require some usage of the Internet thus increasing your ping in game. Obviously if you have broadband or simply a very good connection, you won't experience anything, except for your ping being some units higher.

also, all that lag talking is a bunch of ball. I have a 640kbit connection which is very low, and I actually feel no difference at all if xfire is on.
