Installing DirectX
Do you think I should install DirectX that comes with a new game or is it enough to have a version that came with another (perhaps newer) game? I've heard that the game might malfunction if I don't install the DX it needs but I've also heard that installing a DX might overwrite previous versions which in fact might be newer.

You can't overwrite a new version with a older one to my knowledge.CHRiS CRYBABY wrote:Do you think I should install DirectX that comes with a new game or is it enough to have a version that came with another (perhaps newer) game? Re: Installing DirectX
If you have say (and this would be going way back so laugh if you want), DX6, and a game you want to install has DX5, it would be pretty pointless. But if said game had DX7, then you should probably install it if you want to pleh. Good rule of thumb: Higher numer = install.

Re: Installing DirectX
Its useless to install an older version.
DX10 is much faster than DX9.
I think the same with DX6 and DX7.
But if the Game too old (like Deus Ex ore other unreal engine 1 games) it got problems with your grafic card.
I dont know a game, that runs faster with older DX version than the newest ore a newer version

Re: Installing DirectX
Are you guys sure that the new Direct X releases include all features of older versions?
Re: Installing DirectX
directX9 and DirectX10 are backwards compatible with all older games.

Re: Installing DirectX
Sanguine is right, when you install a game and it asks you to install directx, if you have a newer version already it wont install or overwrite anything
Directx i think comes with every previous version/package to make it a whole, i know for certain directx9 works this way, if you download dx9 and extract it you will see all the old dated versions within the installation.

Re: Installing DirectX
Well, that's a kind of trap.
Basically it is true..
But if you made a fresh vista installation, it also says DirextX10 in the DXDiag program,
however in order to run games, you still need to install DirectX9 afterward.
That's how it happened to a mate of mine.
