Exactly what any other person does on New Year’s Eve. No one relationship status dominates this celebration, or any other. Is it normal being alone on New Year’s Eve? Well, it should be. There should be no normal, the abnormal should be normal. And every person should be able to do whatever they want without feeling bad, guilty or embarrassed. Is it OK to be alone on New Year’s? Of course it is, just like it’s okay to be in a relationship on New Year’s. That’s the beauty of New Year’s, it’s for EVERYONE, and every person has the right and ability to celebrate and enjoy this event. In this post, I will share with you what a single person can do on New Year’s Eve and what you can do on New Year’s Eve instead of going out. So if you’re single, without any plans, and not sure what to do and how you can spend New Year’s Eve on your own… This post is exactly for you. Go out / hangout with friends or family. 1. Suggest a night out without partners. Some of your friends may surprise you. Perhaps they also want a night out away from their spouses and kids. Maybe their spouses also want nights out with their friends. Or alternatively, you can also hang out at someone’s house, and not necessarily go out. 2. Join them and their partners. What’s the difference between going out with three friends, and going out with a couple or two? If they’re decent people, there won’t be any. There’s also no shame in it, not to mention, that the bigger shame would be to just miss out. 3. Invite friends / family over. I guarantee that you are not the only person without plans. So if you can’t join someone else, get people to come join you. Whether it’s your closest friends, family members, work colleagues, or neighbours. Everyone can bring snacks and drinks, you can play games and just have a fun evening together. 4. Spend it with family. What better way to start the year than with your dear family? Especially if your siblings have kids and they go see fireworks, your nephews and nieces would love to have their fun uncle / auntie along. Or maybe just offer to babysit… It’s a great excuse to not go out, and can be fun to hang with the cute kids. Alternatively, you can go visit your parents, I’m sure they’ll appreciate the attention. Stay in and just chill. 5. Resting & calm evening. How about, instead of wallowing about having to stay at home alone, celebrate it instead. And what better way to do that than just allowing yourself to take a break without feeling guilty? Get out your favourite bottle of wine and snacks, and just enjoy your own awesome company. This is also a great way to relax and recharge. 6. Home Self-Date. Let’s face it, this is not the night to go out for your self-date. But it is a wonderful opportunity to have one, from the comfort of your own home. Like a movie night , evening spa date , dinner and dine , a picnic date at home (or in your garden), a DIY or arts & crafts project. 7. NOTHING. Or in other words, just go about your evening, the same as you always would. Truth be told, that’s what most of your friends are probably doing, especially with adult jobs. And even more so if they’re married with kids. Just do your thing, and go through your regular day. Go on a getaway. 8. Staycation in your home country. If you don’t have enough time or money, this is a great option. Just hop on a bus or train to a neighbouring city or town. Or maybe a town over. Just spend the night, or even two. You can either stay in and enjoy the nice hotel room, with takeaway food. Or you can go out and just explore the city. You can go on some of the local attractions and maybe even meet some nice people to hang out with along the way. 9. Staycation at home. Alternatively, if you don’t have the option to go away… You can just stay at home and do some local attractions. Or create a “hotel environment” at home. 10. Day trip. You can either do this as a standalone, or combine it with your staycation at home. You can also sign up for a local tour if you want to go a bit more out. Or you can just go spend the day in the city or any other attraction you’d like. 11. Solo trip. If it’s possible, you can even go on a full-on solo trip. Whether it’s for a long weekend, a few days, a week or even longer. Just go out into the world, experience new things and create for yourself fun adventures. On a solo trip, you can also experience New Year’s Eve at a new place and culture. Which is so cool. And with other travellers you meet along the way. Local events. 12. Go to the local firework show. Every year at our local park, there is a show and some fireworks displays. Even if they don’t have such an event in your town, it’s very likely that one of the neighbouring towns has them. This is a great place to either hang out with yourself and ‘hide in plain sight’, or even be brave and meet new people. 13. Local singles events. No matter what age group you’re in or where you’re from… It’s very likely that you’re not the only single who hasn’t got what to do on New Year’s Eve. It’s also very likely that someone decided to arrange an event for said singles. If not, you can also try to take the initiative and arrange one yourself. 14. Neighbourhood party. Many cities will take over a whole street, market or even neighbourhood and have some fun parties. There will also be so many people and distractions, you won’t have time to feel awkward being on your own. It’s also the best place to start meeting new, random people. Either way, this is a great way to get out of the house and just explore with some nice music.
