The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program was established in 1989, providing support for the overall quality of life for single soldiers, and to help maintain and improve Soldier readiness. Its mission, ‘…to enhance, the morale and welfare of single Soldiers, increase retention, and sustain combat readiness.’ is mission is sustained by BOSS members coordinating activities and events focusing on three critical components of the program: well-being, community service, and recreation/leisure activities. Life Skills, the newest addition to the BOSS Program, provides opportunities for BOSS members to gain lifelong knowledge, a particular skill set, or certification. Members participate in several exciting activities, enjoy various discounts and free passes to shows and sporting events, and are well-respected in the community – on post and off – for the many hours they devote to volunteering. Fort Benning BOSS serves the single Soldier Community: active, guard, and reserve, single parents, and geographical bachelors of all branches of service and Foreign Service Members. BOSS is an official Department of the Army (DA) program managed by the Installation Management Command (IMCOM), G9, Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation but executed at the Garrison level by Soldiers, for Soldiers. Quality of Life/Well Being: This includes issues Soldiers can directly or indirectly influence to enhance their morale, living environment, or personal growth and development.. Community Service: BOSS makes a difference by volunteering in community projects and events on and off the installation. All community service projects provide the opportunity to increase awareness about the BOSS program while demonstrating the outstanding character of BOSS Soldiers. Recreation and Leisure: Fun activities are planned by the BOSS council working in conjunction with the FMWR Advisor and Garrison Command Team. These events are geared towards the desires of the single Soldiers on Fort Benning. Commonly, these work in conjunction with the development or use of specific skills, from cultural knowledge to physical activities such as fishing, skiing, surfing, paintball, rafting, and much more. Ideas for trips and events are planned and supported by BOSS Soldiers and coordinated through the BOSS advisor and president. They must receive military and civilian chain of command approval. Money raised through BOSS fundraisers often pays for a portion of expenses associated with activities. BOSS increases and sustains readiness through leadership and training opportunities, quality of life improvements, community outreach, personal development, and recreation and leisure opportunities.
