General discussion topic. I've noticed a few topics on this sub regarding mistakes that men make while dating women. The mistakes described are understandably cringey and try hard, not only from the woman's perspective but from a guy's perspective if said guy had real standards and a woman was making these same faux pas. It's easy for me to say this now but once upon a time, when I was much younger in my late teens, I was guilty of making similar mistakes on the dating platforms of my day. I was struggling with ASD that made it difficult (but not impossible) to learn and read social cues and communicate in a socially intelligent manner. All I knew about dating was stuff that older female relatives and Hollywood taught me, which was entirely reductive to women as people and promoted unhealthy ideas about dating and romantic relationships in general. After my first real relationship failed, I was resolved to never make the same mistakes again and consulted various self-help and dating coach materials to help me understand women better and to become more attractive and successful at dating. As I practiced the skills I was learning for socializing and dating, I gradually shed the more gimmicky and flamboyant aspects of the dating advice I encountered and found my own voice and identity, dating the women that I connected with best. Instead of using rehearsed opening lines, I was able to approach one on one or larger groups and initiate conversations and flirt with the women that caught my interest. My OLD game improved. The whole experience honed my other social skills and I learned how to work around my social and communication deficits. It also helped me become more independent and capable as I took on more challenges. Fast forward past to a few years ago, coming out of a long relationship but with a better handle on my issues and baggage, I dove into dating again. I took a peek at some dating coach and self/improvement materials that were posted on YouTube and blogs as a refresher course, especially with my first real experience with dating apps. Some of it is real creepy, manipulative and douchey, but there are others that actually promote a healthier approach to dating for men that's more open and tailored to working within your own unique personality. Some of the dating coaches are women and there were other resources that offered general self-improvement tips including dating advice for both men and women! If I hadn't learned then what I do now (mainly what NOT to do), I probably wouldn't be getting far with these dates or even getting dates at all, maybe I would’ve found another way to improve in this area, who know. There are plenty of guys out there who have struggled like me with dating and still struggle to this day, for whatever reasons, barring Covid (late bloomers, little dating experience, mental disorders/neurodivergent, no strong male role models, focused too much on other responsibilities while neglecting dating). What do you think about men who consult dating coach advice to maximize their appeal, to become better versions of themselves, and to improve their social interactions with women, as opposed to the more manipulative and persistent material usually associated with players and pickup artists? Would you view it differently than someone getting advice from a dating sub like here, especially if it helped them to not make the above mentioned dating faux pas? EDIT: This is more of a general discussion topic related to dating based in part on what I’ve noticed reading in some threads and how some men might benefit from 3rd party advice. I didn’t want to take up too much space on my post but another reason I thought about posting this topic here is a female friend found out recently that the guy she’s been seeing and started getting serious with may have used dating advice from a coach that her brother has been using and shown her. She has negative associations with the more toxic corners of mens dating coaches but I assured her that the specific one he may have received his advice from was one of the better ones that I highly recommend: School of Attraction. I was using my own experience with dating coach advice as an example of it being a positive (enhancing the other areas of my life, adding to my personality rather than substituting it and general icebreakers and learning how to have a balanced and organic conversation when getting to know someone in the initial stages of dating.)
